Canon Rick Cross

The Rev. Canon Myrick “Rick” Cross studied political science at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, then went onto earn his master’s and doctoral degrees in educational administration from the University of Maine in Orono and Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He worked in a variety of educational positions for 18 years before becoming a priest. These included secondary school administration, work with Native Americans and research and training at a hospital-based alcohol treatment center.

Rick completed his seminary studies at the General Theological Seminary in New York City. Additional studies have included Jungian psychotherapy, family systems and parent effectiveness training. He has attended the College of Preachers in Washington, D.C., and the National Conference of the Church Commission on Liturgy.

Rick has served as rector of Christ Church in Biddeford, Maine; associate rector of The Church of the Redeemer in Baltimore, Maryland; rector of The Church of the Messiah in Woods Hole, Massachusetts; rector of St. Francis by the Sea in Blue Hill, Maine; and interim rector at St. Patrick’s Church in Brewer, Maine. He came to Christ Church Cathedral in 2005.

In past years, Rick has led various retreats, including clergy retreats to the Holy Land. He has served as co-president of the Massachusetts Episcopal Clergy Association and president of the Falmouth (MA) Interfaith Clergy Association. He was on the board of the Aroostook (ME)Association for Retarded Citizens and has been a member of the Cape Cod Anti-Racism Task Force and HIV/AIDS Council and the Blue Hill Peninsula Youth Needs Assessment Task Force. He co-convened the Diocese of Massachusetts’ Clergy Family Wellness Network. His other diocesan work addressed issues related to education, substance abuse and higher education.

Rick has published a collection of his poetry, In Other Words, as a private edition as a gift to his wife, Amy, a retired kindergarten teacher. His family also includes daughters Katherine and Carrie and son-in-law David.
