The Rev. Canon Joanna Leiserson came to Christ Church Cathedral in
October 2005 from Spokane, Washington, where she served at the
Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Millwood Community Presbyterian
Church and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. It was at St. Stephen’s,
while Christian education director, youth ministries coordinator and
communications director, that she was ordained to the priesthood in
January 2005. Her experience includes coordinating children’s
ministries and Christian education in three churches for over a decade
before moving to Cincinnati.
In addition to parish work, Joanna
has also been active in diocesan and national church ministries for
Christian formation and anti-racism.
Currently she is a reader
for the General Ordination Examinations of the national church. And she
serves on a 19-person national church strategy team for education,
PEALL (Proclaiming Education for All), which is charged with a
comprehensive inquiry into Christian education, theological education
and faith formation in the Episcopal Church.
Joanna has
written a three-year children’s church school curriculum for children,
ages 3 to 12, for the Episcopal Church. And as an anti-racism trainer
for the Episcopal Church, she is dedicated to promoting reconciliation.
In
addition to her master of divinity degree from Gonzaga University in
Spokane, Joanna holds degrees in political science and history from the
University of California at Berkeley. She has three grown children:
Kathleen, Julian, and David.
